The Labor Department said in a statement after Modi’s Twitter announcement that ESIC will provide pension to families of those who have died from Covid and improved and liberalized insurance compensation to dependent family members. They will receive a pension equivalent to 90 per cent of the average daily wage received by the worker according to the standards in force. “This benefit will be available retrospectively from March 24, 2020 and for all these cases until March 24, 2022,” the statement added.

Insurance benefits under the EDLI scheme have been improved and liberalized, the ministry said. “Apart from all other beneficiaries, this will especially help the families of employees who have lost their lives due to Covid. The maximum insurance benefit amount has increased from 6 lakh to 7 lakh,” the ministry said. . The minimum insurance benefit of 2.5 lakh has been reinstated and will apply retrospectively from February 15, 2020 for the next three years

The ministry said the Family Allowance for Contract / Casual Workers will also be made available to employees who may have changed jobs in the past 12 months prior to their death.

“One of the benefits that the ESIC provides after the death or disability of a worker due to an accident at work is the payment of a pension equivalent to 90 percent of the average daily wage received by a worker. This benefit is available for the spouse and widowed mother for life and for the children until they reach the age of 25. In addition, for the girl child, the allowance is available until her birth. marriage, ”said the statement from the Ministry of Labor.

“Over the next three years, the actuary has estimated that eligible family members will receive an additional benefit of 2,185 crore from the EDLI fund over the years 2021-2022 to 2023-24. The number of death claims in under the scheme has been estimated at around 50,000 families per year, including increased claims taking into account the estimated death of around 10,000 workers, which could occur due to Covid, ”the statement added.
