“State government deprives farmers of insurance benefits for horticultural crops”

Burhanpur (Madhya Pradesh): Farmers in Burhanpur have alleged that the state government is depriving them of the benefits of weather-based insurance for horticultural crops.

According to Shivkumar Singh Kushwaha, boss of Progressive Farmers Organization, Burhanpur is a major banana producer. But over the past two or three years, farmers have lost millions of rupees due to the unavailability of weather-based crop insurance for banana crops.

The said insurance scheme is applicable everywhere except Burhanpur in the state. Now, if the government does not take quick action, it will soon launch a protest rally against the tractors.

In this regard, MP Dnyaneshwar Patil said that insurance benefit was available on banana crop in the district, but the insurance company left the area as it suffered losses for many years.

He promised that efforts would be made to ensure that insurance companies start offering policies in the area.

Likewise, the Deputy Director of the Department of Horticulture, RSS Tomar, said that this situation is created due to the lack of government-level bidding due to the COVID-19 years. A good number of complaints were made by farmers in 2017-2018.

At present, the work is stopped because the call for tenders has not been passed. He added that correspondence was ongoing at his level in this regard.
